- About the Trip: This trip is designed
to give an overview of backcountry Winter travel, including snow-camping, meal preparation, snow-conditions analysis, winter travel on skis or snowshoes, route finding, etc. - Accommodations: Our first night is spent in chalet lodging on beautiful Bass Lake. Facilities include lakeside pool and hot tub, as well as tennis courts, market, and restaurants. Chalets contain two queen beds and a fold out queen and are shared among trip participants (3-4 per chalet) unless otherwise arranged. The remaining nights will be in shared tents.
- Group Size: 2-12 participants with 1-2 guides.
- Grade: Moderate to strenuous.
- Equipment: SYMG will be supplying all stoves, fuel and group cook gear. We can also supply personal equipment including sleeping bags, pads, tents, backpacks, snow shovels. Clients will need to bring skis with skins and wax, or snowshoes and personal eating utensils.
- Meals: Meals begin with lunch the first day and are provided through lunch/ trail snacks the last day.
- Cost of the Trip: $795.00 per person ( Small group surcharge of $150.00 per person on group size under 3 people).
- Your Cost Includes: First night's lodging, guide(s), permits, equipment listed above, meals.
- Not Included: Personal gear, tips for guide (10-20% of trip fee is industry standard), transportation, park entry fee. Optional trip cancellation insurance, equipment listed above (snowshoes or skis), alcohol.
- Preparation: We recommend increasing your exercise routine in the month prior to the trip to increase your cardiovascular/aerobic ability. Hiking, with a backpack, preferably on hills and off pavement is excellent practice.
- Day 1: Meet your guide at 6:00pm at the Pines Resort for orientation at the front desk. Check in time is 3pm.
- Day 2: Meet guide at 8:00am at front desk after breakfast and follow him or her into Yosemite National Park to the Badger Pass parking lot (7350'). Leaving from Glacier Point Rd, travel approximately 5 miles on the road until we meet up with the Horizon Ridge "Trail". Leave rd and head into backcountry towards Ostrander Lake. Camp on Horizon Ridge. 8000.
- Day 3: Break camp in morning and head out over Horizon Ridge to Ostrander Lake which would be our goal for night 2 (8505').
- Day 4: Leave camp at Ostrander and day hike to Horse Ridge for exceptional views across Yosemite's Clark Range. Return to camp in late afternoon.
- Day 5: An early start for the long day back to the trailhead. 10.5 miles. Expect to be back about 2-3 pm.
