Hike For Discovery
Glacier Point Road to the Wawona Tunnel
This is a pleasant and moderate 9.5-mile hike with 1,280' up and 3,800' down. This hike goes through what is often one of the premier wild flower areas in Yosemite. It also offers superb views of
Yosemite Valley, especially El Capitan, and the Yosemite high country.
The hike starts on the north side of the Glacier Point Road about 8 miles from the Chinquapin Junction on the Wawona Road. An easy 3/4 mile downhill through a largely Lodgepole Pine forest leads to the beautiful McGurk Meadow with its incredible wild flower display (usually mid to late June through mid August). After crossing the meadow and McGurk Creek on a wooden bridge the level trail angles northwest along the edge of the meadow for about 1/3 mile before once again going into the forest on a gentle downhill grade.
After 2 miles we'll hit the junction with the Pohono Trail (which started at Glacier Point) and which we will follow to the Wawona Tunnel. The trail now becomes rolling, sometimes downhill; sometimes level sometimes up with the occasional short, steep uphill. Along the way we cross several small streams that are literal wild flower gardens in season and after 4.2 miles reach Dewey Point. Sitting in the open on this point, which juts out into Yosemite Valley we can enjoy the view as we eat our lunch.
Leaving Dewey point we walk west along the rim of the Valley for .6 mile to Crocker Point and more views of the Valley and Bridelveil Fall. Another .7 mile brings us to Stanford Point and more views. Continuing west we cross occasional streams for another 1.5 miles to Old Inspiration Point the "official", (if not necessarily accurate), discovery point of Yosemite Valley by non-native people. Another 2 miles of downhill leads past "New" Inspiration Point, the old stage road and finally to the famous Tunnel View at the Wawona Tunnel
We hope you will join us this year for a great cause in one of the worlds most beautiful places!
