Yosemite Fly Fishing Trips

Fly Fishing - Idaho and Montana's Henry's Fork and Madison Rivers - Itinerary

  • About the Trip: The Blue Ribbon Henry's Fork River and the Madison River are both considered two of the best trout streams in America. The consistency of good fishing coupled with size of the fish caught make both of these rivers very exciting and rewarding places to fly-fish. Both rivers are very accessible and easily fished on the same trip.
  • Group Size: 5 participants
  • Grade: Beginner through advanced.
  • Equipment: Bring clothes, personal items, and a fly-fishing rod set-up with flies. Rentals are available through SYMG and must be reserved in advance. Waders for the first and last day of fishing are needed. These can be rented at the local fly-shops near the River upon arrival if you don't have your own.
  • Cost of the Trip: $1650.00 per person with 5 people
  • Your Cost Includes: Guides for the 5 days, boats for two of those days, 4 nights lodging, and lunches while fishing.
  • Not Included: Transportation, breakfasts and dinners at the lodge, tips for guides, fly gear. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Local fishing licenses.
  • Accommodations: We will be staying at the local trout Hunter Lodge in Island Park. Id walking distance to the Henry's Fork and a short rive to the Madison River. The lodge has private cabins and the trip is set up on double occupancy. The lodge has a great restaurant and fly shop on the property.
  • Meals: Guides will supply lunches while guiding. Breakfasts and dinners will be taken at the local restaurants.
  • Recommended Fly Patterns: We typically wait to arrive to finish out our fly buying to check with the local outfitters for their timely recommendations. We will give you a good idea before arrival as well in your orientation packet upon registration.
  • Preparation: If possible, beginners should take a basic casting class prior to the course, rent/watch an instructional video, and/or purchase a copy of THE ORVIS FLY FISHING GUIDE by Tom Rosenbauer.
  • Day 1: Meet at 7pm for dinner at the Trout Hunter Lodge in Island Park, Id. The lodge is a beautiful, easy hour plus drive from Idaho Falls airport. We will have an orientation over dinner. Your rooms will be reserved. Depending on everyone's arrival time we may be able to catch the evening hatch for some fishing as well on day 1.
  • Day 2: After breakfast we will head down to the River ( a short drive from the lodge) and meet one of our local guides from the lodge for a day of instruction and wade fishing Box Canyon. We will have a class on the river about fly fishing in general and how to apply the techniques to fishing the Henry's Fork successfully. In addition to the local guide, your trip leader will also be instructing. Our trip leaders are also very experienced and have intimate knowledge of these rivers. The day will be a wade fishing day. Lunch will be provided on the River mid-day.
  • Day 3: Today, we'll be floating the River in drift boats with our local guides as well as your main SYMG guide. Drift boats are an effective way of fishing the entire stretch of river. In each boat, there will be 2 fisherman and one local guide. Lunch is served mid day together.
  • Day 4: After breakfast we'll load up the trucks and boats and head into Montana about an hour away to fish the famed Madison River. This River is often nymphed and typically very productive for the savvy fisherman. Anglers are often rewarded with large 18-22' rainbow and brown trout throughout any time of the day.
  • Day 5: The trick on Sunday is to arrange for mid-to late afternoon flights so you can wade fish the fruitful lower section of the Henry's Fork which is 40 minutes closer to the airport on your way out of town. After a morning of final fishing, we'll have a quick tailgate snack head back to Idaho Falls for the flights out. We recommend not making flights too much earlier than 4pm to give yourselves plenty of time.
