Backpacking - Mt Whitney (14,495') Backpack - Directions

Directions to the Best Western in Lone Pine, CA            (Custom Google Maps Directions also available)

From Bay Area (San Francisco/Oakland) Take 580 east to 205 to 120 East towards Yosemite. Once in Yosemite, continue on 120 East to Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass to Lee Vining and 395 South. 395 South to Lone Pine. Once in Lone Pine, continuing through town past the stop light and The Best Western is your left on the outskirts of town approximately 1 mile through town. (approx. 7 hours). You can also consider taking the Southern Route route through the Central Valley and Bakersfield around Techachapie. Less scenic but perhaps an easier drive. ( see San Jose directions below).

  • From San Jose, CA
  • Merge onto US-101 S via the ramp to Los Angeles 28.6 mi
  • Take exit 356 for State Hwy 152 E 0.3 mi
  • Turn left at E 10th St/CA-152
  • Continue to follow CA-152 2.8 mi
  • Turn right to stay on CA-152 37.9 mi
  • Take the ramp to Los Angeles/I-5 0.5 mi
  • Merge onto I-5 S 124 mi
  • Take exit 278 for State Hwy 46 toward Lost Hills/Wasco 0.4 mi
  • Turn left at CA-46 (signs for Wasco) 25.2 mi
  • Take the State Hwy 99 ramp to Bakersfield 0.2 mi
  • Merge onto CA-99 S 20.1 mi
  • Take exit 24 toward Tehachapi/Mojave 1.2 mi
  • Merge onto CA-58 E 57.0 mi
  • Take exit 167 for State Hwy 14 toward Mojave/Bishop 0.4 mi
  • Turn left at CA-14 45.9 mi
  • Slight left at US-395 63.9 mi
  • Destination will be on the right

From Los Angeles area: Take Hwy. 14 North to 395 North and once in Lone Pine see above directions to the Portal. (approx. 4 hours)

From San Diego area: Take Hwy. 15 to 395 North to Lone Pine. See directions above.( approx. 6 hours)

From Las Vegas area: Take 95 North to 374 West to 190 West to 136 to Lone Pine. See directions above. (approx. 5 hours)

From Reno: Take 395 South to Lone Pine. See directions above.(approx. 5 hours)

Always carry a California Map with you.

Information on meeting day 1: Your guide(s) will be meeting you at the Best Western lobby at 6pm. Check in time is 4pm. Rooms will be under your names. If for some reason they can’t find your reservation individually, you may also want to remind them that the trip is a Southern Yosemite Mountain Guide( SYMG) trip. After orientation dinner is on your own in Lone Pine.
